A few tips and tricks for your self-guided visit of the Popsilos circuit:

  1. Map and information is all online on the popsilos.ca website. Your smart phone will be handy!
  2. Make sure the farmers’ properties are open to the public for the time at which you plan to visit. Every site has its own hours of operations. If not, you can view the silo from the roadside.
  3. Respect the signs or barriers set-up by the farmers on their properties where entrance is prohibited. Buildings, equipment, tools or any other objects are off limit. You are responsible for your own safety and security on site.
  4. Be respectful of the environment.
  5. Learn about the artwork online at popsilos.ca.
  6. Wear comfortable shoes suitable to farm grounds!
  7. You may or may not be greeted on site. All depends on the farmers’ workday! If they’re free, they’ll love to chat!
  8. If you plan on visiting certain local artisans or producers identified on the Popsilos map, also check in on the website provided to ensure they are open to visitors at the time you plan to visit.

“We are both excited to meet everyone, to share good wine and good relationships that come from good collaborations!  The Popsilos circuit is a great way to bring it all together.”
- Scott Lambert and Teresa Bressan, owners

Popsilos Mural: Kruk by Omen. Theme: Diversity.

OMEN chose to illustrate diversity through a representation of the ecosystem that has been created throughout the years : over 27 000 trees have been planted! This has fostered an ecosystem of its own that many birds (and other animals) call home, namely the raven. The leaves behind the raven are those of different trees on the property: elm, maple and oak. It takes trees of all sorts to create this healthy ecosystem, where crops thrive organically. There's a parallel to be drawn between what’s possible when you create a healthy environmental ecosystem and how Canadians strive to shape their country to foster diversity, where people live harmoniously.

Kruk means raven in Polish and Omen chose to name his work Kruk as it is significant to him, son of Polish immigrants. He also has a personal attachment to ravens.

Creativity, country-living and wine

Scott Lambert and Teresa Bressan were drawn to each other a little later in life and discovered they had the same passion for creativity, country living and wine.  Since that fall day in 2013, they haven’t stopped exploring for a business opportunity to start together. It was a last-minute decision to visit the Vankleek Hill Vineyard in 2018 that brought them to want to make the vineyard theirs. Instantly, driving up the entrance, the breathtaking Popsilo struck them. Their entrepreneurial drive lead them to see the potential instantly. They truly believe in the transformative power of positivity and hard work. Their ability to elevate experiences, engage and inspire others seems to fit within the community-oriented town of Vankleek Hill, Ontario. The Vankleek Hill Vineyard is their windfall.

Today, the 55-acre property boasts over 27 000 mature trees, allowing a natural habitat for all wild life. It has walking trails and rest areas for an absolute oasis of relaxation or to host private events. It is also possible to walk through the six acres of colder climate vines such as Frontenac Noir (red) and Frontenac Gris (white).  New varieties will be added in the near future to diversify their wine production. Scott and Teresa have a vision: an ambitious hand-crafted vineyard that brings families and the community together with great wine. They are excited to start their new adventure and future in the business of winemaking. They are working tirelessly to prepare the vineyard for their grand opening.

1
Welcome home, wanderer with a purpose, roadster,
soul-digger
in the LED shadow of the city lights.
Welcome home to a deep simplicity where
a skyscraper is chasing a dream,
where everything is measured with the speed of words,
where a neighbor is the only sound barrier
where the only scars are endless stars.
Welcome home, you seed of greatness.

2

3
Welcome home, comforting wind, whistling lullaby
crisp warmth, torrid zest.
The Big Golden Green has been waiting for you,
reaping sap and blood
between a drought and a flood.
Cattle crossing and combines are moving landmarks.
Conifers, cereal, apples, grape and barley are whirligigs.
The soil is unfurling its amber hair.
Welcome home, you breath of fresh care.

4

5
Welcome home, immaculate flake, nature's wake.
The Big Silvery White has coated the silky landscape,
pillowcase plains, meringue hills, and Popsicle bushes
in the maple dawn.
The peace army is deployed: a forest is beating.
Every lending hand is a sacred granary.
It is a love story between the skyline and the fields.
It is the trust that binds a pellet and a bud.
Welcome home, you shepherd of cotton swab clouds.

6

7
Welcome home, speck of life,
Native son and daughter of the calming wild
following the indelible footsteps of spirits
sensitive to the echo of the mild
eco-conscious, in stride with Mother Earth and Father Time,
and appeased by the cry of a child.
Buildings like bar codes in the far distance.
Beacon trees and straws of moonlight in the near surroundings.
Welcome home, you thunder whisperer, you lone author of the Almanac.

8
l'humain.

“Farming is an entrepreneurial journey.”
- André Ouimet, owner

Popsilos mural: Farm Boy by Emmanuel Jarus and Zek One. Theme: Youth.

Emmanuel Jarus and Zek One chose to represent youth in the context of the farming community. The young farmer looks towards the sky with confidence, a symbol of hope and ambition for the future. The pitchfork held by the young farmer connects today’s young farmer with the past and is a nod to the farm owners, it being a generational farm. The merger of realism and graffiti art in one piece is an evocative way of representing evolving times, beliefs and ways for a progressive future.

True to the roots

Everytime we drive up the Ouimet Farms Adventure lot, we can see the tractor working away in the field and we await its arrival. We’re greeted with a warm smile. And a happy dog.

André took on his Dad’s farm. He even showed us a picture of his dad looking into the horizon, standing on his farmland. The respect he has for good hard work is palpable. He’s a man of many projects. His most recent venture has him renovating his barn to incorporate what could be a local farmers’ market. He explains he’s encountering a few challenges, but I get the feeling that he’s not at all fazed. He’ll find a way. At least, that’s the look I think I understand in his eyes.

Ouimet Farms Adventure offers a corn maze, blow-up structures for kids, a snack shack. Lots of fun and games. Field crops are what he focuses on nowadays on the agri front.
